When Should You Replace Your Air Conditioner?
Repair or replace? A straightforward way to think about an aging cooling system.
Age alone does not decide it, but it sets the context. As a cooling system gets older, parts availability narrows and the cost of each repair carries less remaining service life behind it.
Look at repair frequency. One repair on an otherwise healthy system is maintenance of a sort; a third call in two summers is a pattern, and patterns get more expensive.
Consider comfort and cost together. If the system struggles through hot spells, runs far longer than it used to, or your cooling costs keep climbing, the operating difference between old and new equipment becomes part of the math.
Finally, weigh the size of the next repair against the condition of everything else in the system. When a major component fails on an aging unit, replacement often makes more sense than reinvesting in it. We lay out both paths with what we found, and you decide.
