How Often Should You Service Your Furnace in the GTA?
Ontario winters put long hours on a furnace. Here is a sensible service rhythm and what a maintenance visit should actually cover.
For most GTA homes, once a year is the right rhythm for furnace maintenance, ideally in early fall before the heating season begins. That timing matters: a problem found in September is an appointment, while the same problem found in January is an emergency.
A worthwhile maintenance visit is more than a filter swap. It should include a look at the burners and heat exchanger, a check of the ignition system and safety controls, blower and airflow review, and measurement of how the system is actually performing rather than just confirming it turns on.
Homes with pets, ongoing renovations or a finished basement that collects dust often benefit from more frequent filter changes between visits. If your furnace is over a decade old, annual service also gives you an honest read on how much life is left, which makes planning a replacement far less stressful than reacting to a failure.
If your furnace has not been serviced in more than a year, or it made new noises last winter, that is the signal to book it now rather than wait for the first cold snap.
