Signs Your Furnace May Need Repair
Most furnace failures announce themselves first. Here are the signals worth acting on early.
Short cycling — the furnace starting and stopping frequently without satisfying the thermostat — is one of the clearest early signals. It usually points to airflow restriction, a sensor issue or a control problem.
New sounds matter. Banging on start-up, a persistent squeal or rattling while running each suggest a different mechanical cause, and describing the sound accurately helps a technician narrow it down quickly.
Watch the comfort pattern too: rooms that used to heat evenly and no longer do, air that feels cooler at the vents than it used to, or a heating bill climbing while your habits have not changed.
Any burner behaviour that looks unusual, or a system that locks out repeatedly, should be inspected rather than reset over and over. Early repair is almost always the smaller job.
